The West Des Moines candy store enjoys global success

For decades, Chocolate Storybook in West Des Moines has been a one-stop shop for satisfying your sweet tooth. Now decked out in festive candy, you can find pretty much anything from peppermint bark to assorted candies. But in one corner of the store, you’ll find shelves and shelves lined with cotton candy, an addition as cute as it is popular. “We started making cotton candy about seven years ago, manufactured at their Des Moines factory. Here they spin, pack and label their products, which are shipped to restaurants and businesses around the world. “We have customers all over the US, even some in France, Dubai and other countries,” said Scherer. “We also do private label for Universal Studios.” Production for chocolate candy floss was underway when KCCI came to visit from their pickle. We also have maple bacon and jalapeno. We even made pizza and ketchup and fried cotton candy,” she said. Shearer and her husband took over the business in 2000. Now decked out in holiday treats, you’ll find pretty much everything from peppermint bark to assorted candies.

But in one corner of the store you’ll find shelves and shelves lined with cotton candy, an addition as cute as it is popular.

“We started making cotton candy about seven years ago. And it’s just exploded since then,” said owner Meg Shearer.

The colorful brew is made at their Des Moines factory.

Here they spin, pack and label their products, which are shipped to restaurants and businesses around the world.

“We have customers all over the US, even some in France, Dubai and other countries,” said Shearer. “We also do private labels for Universal Studios.”

When KCCI visited, the production of chocolate candy floss was in full swing.

But that’s one of their more regular flavors, they have about 50 rotating selections from sweet to savory.

“One of them is cucumber, one of them is pickles. We also have maple bacon and jalapeno. We even made pizza and ketchup and fried cotton candy,” she said.

Shearer and her husband took over the store in 2000.

After more than 20 years, they say they’re ready to raise the bar – namely candy bars!

“We’re constantly trying to innovate because, like I said, we’re one of the few places that does what we do,” she said.
