Each year, students, faculty and staff at Iowa Central Community College come together in a collaborative effort for the year “Share What You Wear” Event.
The 18th annual event will be held December 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Career Education Building on the Iowa Central campus. Donations are currently being accepted and can be dropped off on certain days in November.
Share What You Wear is a campus-wide, community-focused event designed to help those in need during the holiday season, accepting donations of new or gently used clean clothing, boots, shoes, coats, gloves, hats, toys, baby items, and usable household items , sheets, towels, blankets, travel size soaps and shampoos and school supplies.
“This event has grown each year as the need in our community has grown,” said Jenny Shivers, director of student services at Iowa Central. “The doors are open on Saturday morning for anyone in need. We serve breakfast and lunch for free and they can take as much or as little as they need.”
The campaign allows those in need to bring some holiday cheer to their loved ones. It’s also the biggest community event of the year for Iowa Central. Donations can be taken to the drop-off point in the vocational training building on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., where the storage trolley is located. Deadlines are November 29th and December 1st. On December 2, items can be dropped off during set-up in the Career Education Building from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m
“This is a campus-wide nonprofit event that allows Iowa Central to give back to the communities that support the college so much,” said Shivers.
Toys and new items that can be gift wrapped will also be accepted.
“The best thing is seeing the faces of so many children taking home a toy or wrapping a gift they chose for their parents to put under the tree.” Said Shivers.
