Ranked 24th, Iowa makes its season debut in the US TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

With Iowa set to host the Omaha Mavericks tonight, the Hawkeyes officially make their season debut in the US TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Iowa (3-0) sits at No. 24 and enters the poll for the first time this season, having received votes in each of the first two editions. The Hawkeyes earned 22 points in the Oct. 25 preseason poll and 52 points in the Nov. 14 USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches poll last week. Iowa also ranks 25th in this week’s AP Top 25 College Basketball poll.

So far, Iowa has impressed Bethune-Cookman, 89-58, North Carolina A&T, 112-71, and Seton Hall, 83-67. Kris Murray just set his career-high 29 points against the Pirates and is currently averaging 21.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

In fact, all Iowa starters are currently averaging double digits in the Hawkeyes’ first three games. Patrick McCaffery averages 14.7, Tony Perkins averages 13.3, Filip Rebraca averages 11.0, and Payton Sandfort averages 10.7 points per game.

The top 10 from the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll looks like this: #1 North Carolina, #2 Houston, #3 Kansas, #4 Texas, #5 Gonzaga, #6 Virginia, #7 Baylor, No. 8 Creighton, No. 9 Arkansas and No. 10 Duke.

While there are no other league programs in the top 10, five other Big Ten programs feature in the most recent top 25 rankings. Indiana is #11, Illinois is #14, Michigan State is #15, Purdue is #23, and Maryland is #25.
