It’s been 12 years since this chicken shop opened in eastern Iowa

12 years have passed since the city of Clinton turned heads thanks to a man wearing a watch as a necklace. The grand opening of Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton, IA was 12 years ago, but it seems like yesterday that Clinton was a circus around the restaurant that only lasted 4 months.

Now, the Facebook memories that pop up are just reminding Clinton residents, people who worked there, and those who ate at the chicken shop that Flav’s Fried Chicken really is a Clinton joke and something you shouldn’t believe should be missed.

Not much happens in Clinton, Iowa. Having been born and raised in Clinton, I definitely know that. When I went to college and people asked where my hometown was, there are only a handful of things I can say about Clinton that make her seem unique. The hometown of NFL running back David Johnsonthe widest part of the Mississippi Riverthe hometown of Iowa Hawkeye and NFL star Duke Slaterand the birthplace of Flav’s Fried Chicken.

On Jan. 24, 2011, rap group Public Enemy co-founder, television star and rapper William Jonathan Drayton Jr., better known as Flavor Flav, opened the first of supposedly many venues Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton, Iowa.

Flavor Flav partnered with Nick Cimino, who at the time owned Mama Cimino’s, a pizza joint in Clinton. Cimino and Flav met through Cimino’s brother Peter, who owned the other Mama Cimino’s in Las Vegas. Peter was selling fried chicken using Flavor Flav’s recipe and wanted to make a national franchise. That became a reality when they opened the first chain in my hometown and Cimino’s hometown of Clinton.

I had some friends who worked at Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton. Some weren’t paid, weren’t impressed with the food preparation and really didn’t enjoy working there.

Although I lived in Clinton at the time, I never set foot there. I had chicken from there once when I was working at Fareway and I wasn’t impressed.

I asked people on my personal Facebook to share pictures and a review if they could remember how it tasted. Former B100 morning show hosts Redhot Brian Scott and Tony Tone said the food was good. Others agreed, saying the food was good, others said “the chicken was nasty.”

Anyway, Flav’s Fried Chicken in Clinton didn’t last long. After bounced checks, owner disputes, and horrific business decisions, Flav’s Fried Chicken closed its door in Clinton on April 24, 2011.

These are some of the pictures that my friends have shared with me.

Happy 12 Years of Flav’s Fried Chicken!
