Iowa Wrestling: #2 Iowa vs Sacred Heart/Buffalo Preview, How To Watch & Match Thread

Following our victory over a resolute Army team last night, 28-13, our Hawkeyes brave the coming winter storms to take on Sacred Heart and Buffalo tonight in Albany, NY.

A few hours west, back in Buffalo where their university is, they are expected to get between 2 and 4 feet of snow starting tonight. So far I haven’t heard of any issues with the upcoming event, which will feature 8 teams competing in a round robin format: #2 Iowa, #9 NC State, Illinois, Central Michigan, Buffalo, Sacred Heart, Castleton, and New Jersey .

SACRED HEART (0-4)

The Pioneers have had a rough start to the year as they start the game 0-4. After being eliminated in their previous 3 duels against #13 Lehigh, #21 Rutgers and Army, they finally cracked the scoreboard and lost a close duel to Long Island University last weekend, 18-17.

They don’t have anyone in the top 25, but they do have some keyweight upper strata we should keep an eye on: Matt Laurie (149) and Nick Palumbo (157), who was a 2021 national qualifier just 5-5 this season.

SHU competes in the EIWA which is in D1 but they’ve had a rough road in the past few years and I can’t imagine that will change tonight.

BUFFALO (2-3)

The Bulls are sitting 2-3 in their short lost/win/flush/repeat season so far. The competition wasn’t the strongest either, but they held up respectably. Despite some one-sided results, they held some of their games pending decision.

They have 3 wrestlers that appear in the rankings: #20 Michael Petite (157 lbs), #28 Jay Nivison (174 lbs), and #32 Giuseppe Hoose (184 lbs). Coincidentally, 157lbs and 174lbs are still unproven weights for us, so the bulls will be looking to pull off some surprises.

Outside of those 3 rankings, they’re a relatively young team with only one senior in the starting XI and that’s in the heavyweight division.

IOWA (2-0)

We have another win behind us, extending our winning streak to 5 consecutive duels from last season. Yesterday we won again Army 7/10 with 5 bonus points. However, it will probably be remembered for those 3 big losses (2 of them absolute beatdowns) and the missed opportunity for some tech falls from our big guns.

Lackluster performance notwithstanding, we should tip our hats to Army in a hard-fought battle. They fought with a high IQ and kept most matches close. Also, these guys were real walkers. Outside of 197 pounds, I don’t recall seeing any of their guys carb, which is usually when we start pouring it later in the games.

Either way, tonight’s two duels will provide impetus before returning to the Carver Hawkeye area after the Thanksgiving break.

As in the two previous duels, we again see reinforcements at 125, 141 and 174 and Schriever at 133 (Teske falls out). We could very well put up a shutout against SHU, but Buffalo will prove to be a challenge considering who’s our turn tonight.
