On Friday, November 18, the Iowa Wild took on the Milwaukee Admirals at Wells Fargo Arena with a special guest. Zach Palmquist, who played for Iowa from 2014 to 2018, was on hand to sign autographs and meet with fans who had been attending Wild games since the team’s early seasons. The Iowa Wild caught up with the former defender, who now resides in Minnesota.

What have you been up to since you got here in Des Moines?

After leaving Des Moines, I signed with the Philadelphia Flyers and played for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for a year. After that I played two seasons in Europe, in Sweden, before I decided to hang up the skates. I’m now back home in Minnesota with my wife and two kids, where I coach high school hockey.

What was your favorite on-ice moment while playing for the Wild?

That’s a great question. You know, I think it’s my first goal here on home ice for me. I don’t remember the exact date and I don’t remember the team it was played against, but it was actually a man down and I was obviously a defender. I pushed through the slit. I knew I had a chance there, so I scored.

What have been your favorite moments off the ice here in Des Moines?

Meeting a lot of great people and playing with great teammates who have become lifelong friends. In addition, I have been able to be part of this community for so many years and also meet so many people through this aspect of life. I mean, even as I was signing autographs in the hall tonight, I saw a lot of people that I’ve bonded with and been around a lot during my time here.

Who were your favorite teammates when you were here and who are you still in contact with?

To be honest, there are a lot of them. Lots of guys from Minnesota. Nick Seeler, Hunter Warner is still one of my best friends. Gerald Mayhew, Sam Anas, Gustov Olofsson, Kurtis Gabriel, Zach Mitchell, the list goes on. You know, it’s always cool to keep up with what these guys are doing.

Have you been back to the Wells Fargo Arena between your playing days and now?

I did. I made 2019 a year, I came back for a playoff game down here. It was the year after I left and the Wild made the playoffs. My season at Lehigh ended and Hunter Warner and a few other guys were still on the team, so I wanted to come down and support them. It was cool to see the atmosphere of a playoff game here because I never got to do that with Des Moines, so it was really cool to be able to cater to that aspect.
