Iowa State vs UConn odds, tips and predictions tonight

Not only did the UConn Huskies start the season undefeated 7-0, they also threw their opponents out of the running in a particularly impressive manner. Our college basketball pick expects that to continue in the Phil Knight Invitational Finals against Iowa State.

The Phil Knight Invitational concludes Sunday night with a matchup that may surprise some viewers.

Iowa State (5-0) has impressed so far, beating Villanova 81-79 in the first game before posting a shock 70-65 win over North Carolina to advance to the finals.

Ending things doesn’t get much easier as UConn (7-0) waits with an unbeaten record after blowing out both Oregon and Alabama to open the tournament.

Iowa State vs UConn best odds

Selection and predictions between Iowa State and UConn

UConn was one of the most impressive teams in the country at the start of the season. After five wins by at least 20 points against overwhelming competition, Dan Hurley’s side kept things going at the Phil Knight Invitational with an 83-59 win over Oregon and an 82-67 win over Alabama.

The Huskies are ranked 8th on KemPoms Ratings, 14th on offense and 10th on defense. They are a solid team at both ends of the court and will not find it easy for any opponent this season given their hot start cannot be overlooked given the winning margin in each individual competition.

I expect that success to continue in Sunday’s finals at the Chiles Center in Portland, Oregon. The Huskies are 6-0-1 against the spread this season and will face a tough test in an Iowa State roster at 4-1 ATS, but I believe Hurley’s team is the superior team and that will come in the matchup at Sunday clearly.

The big man Adama Sanogo is among the best players in the nation. He’s been a threat this season, averaging 20.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while averaging one steal (1.0) and one block (0.9) per game. The rest of the team isn’t chock full of household names just yet, but Jordan Hawkins (13.0), Tristen Newton (12.6) and Alex Karaban (10.4) are all averaging double digits.

Iowa State is clearly a program worthy of more respect than it did after Sweet 16’s surprise performance last year and a hot start to the 2022-23 season, including a win over North Carolina.

Still, TJ Otzelberger’s team is superior in this duel, considering the Cyclones are only 43rd overall in KenPom. They check in at 82nd in offensive efficiency and fight from beyond the arc at 287th in 3-point percentage (30.4%).

Those numbers won’t make it against a Huskies team that’s looking elite on both ends of the court this season. I attach here the points with UConn.

Iowa State vs. UConn spread analysis

Both teams have been great against dispersion this season so something has to give way. Iowa State is 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS while UConn is 7-0 SU and 6-0-1 ATS. College basketball odds seem to think the state of Iowa deserves respect at this point, as the line rose from +6.5 in open to +5.5 in power on the Cyclones’ side.

I don’t see this team having much firepower this season. St Bonaventure signing Jaren Holmes is the star of the show, averaging 17.8 points per game, but he’s certainly no beacon of efficiency, taking 15.6 shot attempts per game to match that number at 42.3% shot reach.

Three other players (Caleb Grill, Osun Osunniyi, Gabe Kalschuer) average double digits, although only the big man Osunniyi shoots over 42% from the field.

UConn was one of the most impressive teams in the country earlier in the year, and performances against Oregon and Alabama didn’t look random. Sanogo will be the best player on the floor and there are plenty of shooters around him as the Huskies are 35th on 3 point percentage (38.5%) and have six different players averaging at least one Have threes per game.

They have one of the best players in the country and have excelled at both ends of the pitch. I’ll ride with them until I’m given another reason.

Iowa State vs. UConn Over/Under Analysis

Iowa State’s inefficiencies on offense and elite defensive play have resulted in a 4-1 win over the Unders this season. The opener against Villanova sped past the 125.5 total in an 81-79 overtime game and the 70-65 finish against North Carolina fell five points short of the 140-point total.

UConn is a different story, starting with a profitable 5-2 to the over. Both Portland games found the over, albeit just barely — the Oregon game ended five points above the 137-point total and the Alabama game went just one point above the 148-point total.

Oddsmakers have set that total at 135. That seems like a fair number as the Cyclones are unlikely to explode offensively and their propensity to play great defense means UConn could be kept in check more than so far this season.

I would lean towards the under at this point considering this is a tournament final and both teams are playing solid defense. UConn ranks 31st in percentage of field goals allowed (42.1%) and ranks 10th in KenPom’s defensive efficiency, and it certainly helps to have a stalwart player like Sanogo.

The state of Iowa thrives on defending the 3-point line and ranks 39th in terms of 3-point allowable percentage (27%). That should help the Cyclones at this point against a UConn team that came out of the deep earlier in the year.
