Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity forms an endowment with the Waterloo Community Foundation

WATERLOO – The Waterloo Community Foundation announces the establishment of the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity-Waterloo Endowment Fund.

In 1990, Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity began building affordable homes for qualified homebuyers and performing critical home repairs in homes in Black Hawk, Butler, Bremer, and Buchanan counties.

As Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity looks to the future, the organization recognizes the need for an asset-based, full-scale neighborhood revitalization in hopes of improving the quality of life for families in local neighborhoods. Working with residents, organizations, local officials and businesses, it helped form the Walnut Neighborhood Housing Coalition in 2016 to revitalize the Walnut area.

Since then, Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity has played a significant role in partnering with low-income neighborhood owners to make critical home repairs and prevent existing homes from further decay. In addition, the Company is completely renovating vacant homes in the neighborhood and selling them to new Habitat homebuyers and plans to build or renovate 12 more vacant properties over the next three years.

The organization is now expanding its revitalization efforts into the Church Row neighborhood, located between West Sixth Street and US Highway 63 and stretching from US Highway 218 to Kimball Avenue. The neighborhood is home to approximately 1,483 residential units, including homes, rentals, and apartments.

“We recognize that approaching revitalization of the neighborhood with a holistic mindset is a long-term commitment,” said Ali Parrish, executive director of Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. “Building an enduring source of long-term support for this work allows us to plan for the continued transformation that housing can bring to the communities we serve.”
