UNDATED (AP) — Nebraska and former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule strike a deal to make him coach of the Cornhuskers. A person with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press Nebraska made Rhule an offer Thursday that convinced the former Temple and Baylor coach to return to college after more than two years in the NFL. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as contract details are yet to be worked out. Among those details is how much money the Panthers would owe Rhule. He was fired five games in his third NFL season.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Casey Thompson threw for three touchdowns, and Nebraska ruined Iowa’s chance to take the Big Ten West Division title with a 24-17 win. The Huskers (4-8, 3-6 Big Ten) ended a five-game losing streak and broke a seven-game losing streak against the Hawkeyes (7-5, 5-4). Iowa had broken its four-game winning streak. Thompson threw touchdown passes from Trey Palmer for 87 and 18 yards in the first half and a 14-yarder for Marcus Washington in the third as Nebraska built a 24-0 lead. Iowa had a chance to level the game with two possessions in the final 3:20 but failed to score.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Joey Hauser had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 12 Michigan State repel a strong challenge from Oregon and win 74-70 in the consolation round of Friday night’s Phil Knight Invitational tournament. Tyson Walker added 18 points and eight assists for the Spartans (4-2) while Pierre Brooks II had 15 points. Will Richardson led the Ducks (2-4) with 28 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Kel’el Ware added 17 points and Rivaldo Soares had 10.
NICEVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Junor Patrick McCaffery scored 21 points and No. 25 Iowa held off Clemson 74-71 Friday night to reach the Emerald Coast Classic championship game. Iowa (5-0) meets TCU in Saturday’s title game. Clemson (4-2) plays the California. Tony Perkins scored eight of his 11 points in the last two minutes, made a layup and six of six free throws to quell the Tigers’ threat. Chase Hunter led Clemson by 21 points.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Skyy Clark had a career-high 19 points, RJ Melendez had a career-high 17 and No. 16 Illinois cruised past Lindenwood 92-59 on Friday night. Lindenwood (3-5) hit three of his first four shots to take a 7-6 lead, but it was short-lived. Illinois (5-1) quickly took a 22-13 lead, starting the game with 10-of-15 points from the field and scoring 63.6% in the first half. Forward Keenon Cole led the Lions with 20 points in 8-of-11 shooting.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Mackenzie Holmes scored 18 of her 26 second-half points and Yarden Garzon added 21 to help No. 6 Indiana beat Auburn 96-81 in Friday night’s Las Vegas Invitational. The Hoosiers (6-0) had five players in double figures. Indiana’s more even scoring overcame a 22-point effort from Auburn’s Honesty Scott-Grayson and Aicha Coulibaly. Scott-Grayson had 20 of those points in the first three quarters before the Hoosiers’ defense went down in the fourth.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Caitlin Clark had 28 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead No. 9 Iowa to a 73-59 win over Oregon State in the semifinal round of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament. Monika Czinano added 17 points and McKenna Warnock contributed 12 to help the Hawkeyes (5-1) advance to Sunday’s PKL Championship game where they face No. 3 UConn. Talia von Oelhoffen led the Beavers (4-1) with 22 points while Shalexxus Aaron had 17 points as Oregon State suffered its first loss of the season. Jelena Mitrovic had 14 rebounds.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Julian Reese scored 22 of his 24 first-half points, Hakim Hart added 22 points and No. 23 Maryland beat Coppin State 95-79 on Friday. Jahmir Young had 21 points for the Terrapins (6-0) in their first game as a ranked team this season. Coppin State’s Juan Dixon first trained against the program he led to a national title as a player in 2002 and was warmly applauded when he was introduced before the game. Dixon is Maryland’s all-time points leader with 2,269 points and is in his sixth season with the Eagles. Sam Sessoms scored 28 points for the Eagles (3-5). You’ve lost three times in a row.
