The Bruins’ winning streak ended in a loss to the Bulls

The Austin Bruins met a hot keeper at Riverside Arena on Friday night as their hot streak cooled in a 3-2 loss to the North Iowa Bulls.

The Bruins beat the Bulls 36-17, but their six-game winning streak ended due to an effective night by North Iowa goaltender Mitch Day.

“Your goalkeeper played superbly. He won them the game, no questions asked,” said Steve Howard, Austin head coach. “It is the nature of the beast. We made their keeper look good with most of our shots and they won some fights in front of our net, which can’t happen.”

North Iowa went 3-1 when Eli Miller scored a power play goal during a crowd play near the net when 4:27 was still in the game.

Austin pulled his keeper with three minutes left, creeping up to 3-2 when Austin Salani scored with 1:27 left.

The Bruins (14-3-1-3 overall) had two power plays in the first ten minutes of the final period, but missed on both occasions. Walter Zacher was denied in a one-on-one with Day with 8:52 left in regulation, and Day stopped Zacher with a close look at 6:30 left.

“You don’t necessarily have to be angry if you lose tonight,” Howard said. “We want to win all our games but at the end of the day we played our game and only conceded a few goals that shouldn’t have happened and their goalkeeper made some great saves. Hats off to him.”

The Bulls (12-10-1-0 overall) took a 2-1 lead late in the second half when Max Scott got close to the net and played through a shot on goal.

Bruin goalie Ethan Robertson came out from back-to-back shutouts but conceded a goal in the first half when North Iowa’s Landon Peterson found the net. Robertson was slapped on the play and was replaced by Trent Wiekmen.

Austin leveled the game 1-1 as Ocean Wallace was linked by Josh Giuliani, who hammered home for a spot-on pass for a one-off power play goal.
